Earlier this year I made what many saw as a bold prediction:  The Canon R6 Mark III would be the camera of the year for 2025. This week, PetaPixel announced their year-end awards – low and behold, the R6 Mark III won not only PetaPixel’s camera of the year award (based on internal PetaPixel staff voting) as well as the People’s Choice Camera of the Year award. PetaPixel notes that this is the first time ever that a single camera has won both these categories…which apparently they’ve only been doing for a couple of years…but still!
In the case of the People’s Choice award, the voting wasn’t even close. With 22 entrants on the ballot, The R6 Mark III garnered an astonishing 42% of the vote. In a year that saw the release of not only the Canon R6 Mark III, but also the Sony A7 V and the Nikon Z5 II, for Canon to win this reward is truly remarkable. Canon was of course late to the mirrorless game, and provided Sony an unmistakable vacuum to fill – which they effectively did. But with the release of the R3, R5, and R6, Canon had largely caught up to Sony in the capability where Sony was the strongest – autofocus. The R6 Mark III is the first Canon camera that both industry experts and fans alike agree exceeds the capabilities and desirability of its Sony near peer. Great job Canon!
