Friends and readers of ThruMyLens will recall that on July 18th of this year, my wife and I bought a Rottweiler puppy whom we named Zeus. Our experience with Zeus was so overwhelmingly positive, we soon began considering adding another Rottweiler puppy to our “pack.”
Given that we already have two Labrador Retrievers, one might question the wisdom of buying a 4th large dog. But for us it made sense. Zeus has very much bonded to me, and we wanted another Rottweiler that might more closely bond with my wife Karen. We also have gotten into showing Rottweilers so having another from a show/competition perspective again made sense. Our experience has also been that dogs do better in pairs. Since our Labs are already five and will likely pass before Zeus, we thought it would be better to have another Rottweiler closer to his age.
We inquired with our breeder Krafthaus Rottweilers, and she had another litter coming in August. The timing seemed good – that would put the new puppy about 3-4 months younger than Zeus. Also, Zeus’s mother was the grandmother to this new litter…which would make Zeus the uncle to the puppies in the new litter. Perfect!
We were so excited, we went to see new puppies just days after they were born (August 21st)…so tiny!
We visited about a month later on September 29th to pick out one of the puppies. Here’s a shot of the litter:
We were allowed to pick one of the top “show quality” puppies in the litter based on our breeder’s recommendation. Here’s a couple of photos of us holding the puppy:
It would be another four long weeks until we could bring him home – and it took my wife nearly that long to settle on his name. But on Friday, October 25th, my wife brought home… Maximus Sohn Von Holbrook Vom Krafthaus.
The first night, Maximus (we call him Max for short) got to know his surrounds a bit, and was introduced to his “pack” of Hans and Lady (our Labs) and of course his Uncle Zeus. Almost immediately it became obvious that Max was very much a “people” dog and needs to be around people. He also very much began bonding with my wife and followed her wherever she went. Saturday and Sunday were largely spend spent playing – which Max very much enjoyed. He particularly loved playing with his Uncle Zeus and idolizes him.
I think there’s going to be a special bond between these two youngsters!
We feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful addition to our pack of fur babies!
Stay tuned for more photos of both Maximus and Zeus and they get older (and bigger!).
I hope you enjoyed the photos – all were taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III, my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens, and processed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5, Adobe Photoshop CS6, and OnOne Software Perfect Photo Suite.
