July 2011 – The Master Bathroom Project
A few days ago we discovered that a small leak in a pipe from the toilet in the master bathroom had done some significant damage to the subfloor in the master bathroom. We have been itching to re-do the master bath, so this problem really was more of a blessing because it gave us the perfect excuse to get moving on this project. Since the linoleum floor couldn’t be salvaged to do the repair, we were going to have to have it all ripped up and replaced. So it made sense to go ahead and have the rest of the work done that we wanted. Here’s a “before” photo of our bathroom:
Now here are some “during” pictures of the Great Bathroom Remodel Project of 2011 – most are simply quick photos taken with my iPhone 4 so forgive the quality. And before you ask, NO…I did absolutely none of this work – we hired a contractor. I’m not at all a “handy man.”
The “bomb is dropped” and everything is ripped out:
Once the old shower/tub insert was removed and the drywall torn out, we discovered considerable unused space. The area where the step stool was simply open, unused space:
It’s not enough room to give us the corner garden tub we were hoping for, but it does give us some nice space for a large, custom shower.
At this point in the project, “humpty dumpty” is coming back together again – the new sub floor is down, plumbing moved, and the new shower is taking shape:
Here you can see the shelves that are being built in the shower, and the overhead light:
Now things are starting to shape up – the drywall is in:
The shower:
The new tub is in – a Jacuzzi brand heated and jetted tub:

This project has gone well over on both time and budget, but I’m happy to report that I was able to try out my newly built custom shower this morning (we need to make sure there are no leaks…so might as well use it):
The frameless glass door has not yet been installed – that will be one of the last things they do. Here’s the interior of the shower:
At this point, we’re still about a week away from the project being completed, but the toilet, shower, and bathtub are functional. I’ll certainly break out my Canon 5D Mark II and take some higher quality photos once it is finished!

As you can see from this photo, all is nearly complete on this project:
The vanity is in, double sinks are in, since faucets installed, and the frameless shower door is installed. A few more details need to be completed, but the bathroom is completely usable at this point. All should be finished on Monday!
