The Apple AirPods Max vs. Sony WH-1000XM6

The market for high-end consumer headphones has become increasingly competitive over the past decade, with Apple and Sony emerging as two of the most recognizable players. Both companies offer flagship noise-canceling headphones that are widely considered “premium” by mainstream consumers: the Apple AirPods Max and the Sony WH-1000XM6.  That label, however, deserves a bit of context. While these headphones sit near the top of the consumer electronics market, they are still far from the upper tier of the broader headphone world. Companies like Bang & Olufsen produce headphones that can cost well over $2,000, placing Apple and Sony’s offerings somewhere in the mid-tier of the luxury audio spectrum rather than the absolute summit.

Still, for most consumers shopping for wireless noise-canceling headphones, the decision often comes down to these two brands. Both deliver excellent sound quality, effective active noise cancellation, and modern features designed for today’s streaming-first listening habits.

Where they differ is philosophy

Sony has spent years refining a formula built around lightweight comfort, extremely effective noise cancellation, customizable sound tuning, and compatibility across a wide range of devices.

Apple has taken a very different approach. The AirPods Max are designed to function as an extension of the Apple ecosystem, combining high-end materials with computational audio, spatial processing, and deep integration with Apple hardware and services.

After spending time listening to both headphones across music playback, travel scenarios, and home theater viewing, the differences between Sony and Apple became very clear. Both headphones are excellent—but they cater to different priorities.

Price and Positioning

Let’s start with the basics.  The Sony WH-1000XM6 retail for approximately $449, placing them firmly in the premium noise-canceling headphone category.

The Apple AirPods Max launched at $549, which initially made them the most expensive mainstream noise-canceling headphones available. However, real-world pricing has evolved since their release. Today, AirPods Max can frequently be found for around $500 or less, particularly during sales events.

In my case, I purchased my pair for $450, which effectively puts them in the same price range as the Sony headphones.  At launch, the AirPods Max felt significantly more expensive. At today’s street prices, the comparison becomes much closer.

Design, Build Quality, and Aesthetics

This is one area where Apple clearly stands apart.  The AirPods Max feel like a luxury product the moment you pick them up. The aluminum ear cups, stainless steel frame, and mesh headband create a level of build quality that is rare among wireless headphones. The materials feel dense, precise, and durable, and visually they look distinctive and premium.

The Sony WH-1000XM6, by contrast, follow Sony’s familiar design language. They are primarily plastic and visually more understated. There’s nothing wrong with the design—it’s clean, functional, and well-built—but compared to the AirPods Max they simply look more basic.

Apple’s headphones feel engineered like a piece of high-end hardware. Sony’s feel like excellent consumer electronics.

Comfort and Weight

The trade-off for Apple’s materials is weight.  The AirPods Max are significantly heavier than the Sony headphones. On paper this might sound concerning, but in practice the mesh headband distributes the weight surprisingly well. For my typical use—watching a movie, listening to music, or wearing them during a 2–3 hour flight—the weight has never been an issue.

That said, I rarely wear them for extremely long sessions. For someone planning to use headphones all day, the weight could become noticeable.  This is where Sony clearly has the advantage.  The WH-1000XM6 are much lighter, and objectively they are probably the more comfortable headphones for extended listening sessions. If long-term comfort is the top priority, Sony likely wins this category.

Sound Quality: Two Different Philosophies

The biggest difference between these headphones is how they are tuned.  The Sony WH-1000XM6 lean toward a bass-forward sound signature. The low end has strong presence and energy, which can make modern genres—pop, electronic music, and hip-hop—sound lively and exciting.  Sony also offers extensive EQ controls through their companion app, allowing listeners to customize the sound profile.

The AirPods Max, on the other hand, are tuned closer to what many listeners would consider reference audio. The presentation feels more balanced and controlled. Bass is present but not exaggerated, vocals sit naturally in the mix, and instruments maintain excellent separation.

For listeners who enjoy strong bass and an energetic sound profile, the Sony headphones may be the more appealing option. For listeners who value accuracy and balance, the AirPods Max provide a more refined listening experience.

In my own listening tests—especially with well-recorded acoustic music and live performances—the AirPods Max created a more believable sense of space and clarity.

Spatial Audio vs. Sony 360 Reality Audio

Both companies offer immersive audio technologies.

Sony promotes 360 Reality Audio, while Apple focuses on Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.  In my experience, Apple’s implementation worked better overall.  When watching movies and TV shows mixed in Dolby Atmos, the AirPods Max created a convincing home-theater-style soundstage. Dialogue felt anchored directly to the screen, while music and environmental effects expanded around the listening space.  Sony’s 360 Reality Audio works with supported content, but in my testing it felt less cohesive.

That said, there is an important caveat. Sony’s immersive audio technologies are designed to integrate closely with Sony Bravia televisions. If the WH-1000XM6 were paired with a Sony TV, the results might differ. Using Apple hardware and Apple services, Apple’s spatial audio experience felt significantly more refined.

Active Noise Cancellation

Both headphones offer excellent active noise cancellation.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 may have a slight edge in raw noise suppression. Sony has spent years perfecting ANC technology, and the XM series has long been considered one of the best in this category.

That said, the difference is relatively small. The AirPods Max still block out a substantial amount of ambient noise and perform extremely well in everyday environments.

Transparency Mode

Where Apple clearly wins is Transparency Mode.  Apple’s implementation is remarkably natural. Environmental sounds and conversations come through clearly and realistically, almost as if you are not wearing headphones at all.

Sony’s transparency mode works well, but it still sounds like a processed microphone feed. Apple’s version feels far more seamless.

Ecosystem Integration

For Apple users, this is where the AirPods Max become very difficult to beat.  Features like automatic device switching, instant pairing, spatial audio integration with Apple TV, and seamless interaction with Apple Music create a listening experience that feels cohesive across devices.

Sony’s headphones work perfectly well with Apple products, but they don’t feel as deeply integrated.  For Android or Windows users, however, the equation flips. The Sony WH-1000XM6 are almost certainly the better choice outside the Apple ecosystem.

Final Verdict

Both headphones are excellent products.  For users outside the Apple ecosystem, the Sony WH-1000XM6 are the obvious recommendation. They cost less, offer outstanding noise cancellation, and deliver a powerful, bass-forward sound that many listeners will enjoy.

But for someone firmly embedded in Apple’s ecosystem, the AirPods Max ultimately deliver the better overall experience.  They offer superior build quality, a more premium design, excellent spatial audio integration, and the best transparency mode I’ve experienced in any headphones.

For my own listening habits—and particularly for home theater use with AppleTV 4k—the AirPods Max remain my personal preference.
