My First Photoshoot Using the Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight

A couple of months ago I posted my review of the Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight.  This past weekend, I got my first opportunity to use it on assignment.  I was asked to photograph a Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the local high school.  The assignment involved taking photos of the invited guests prior to the awards ceremony, and then of the award presentations themselves.  I used my RF 24-70 f2.8 mated to my Canon R5 Mark II.  In addition to the  Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight, I used the Westcott Diffusion Dome which magnetically attaches to the speedlight.

The room where the ceremony was held had fairly low ceilings so I kept the FJ80 II at about a 45 degree angle to get some bounce from the ceiling and avoid shooting directly into my subjects.  I shot in TTL mode on the FJ80 II the entire time, and shot in manual mode on the camera, adjusting shutter speed as I went around the room.  The light produced by this set was gorgeous and very even.  I was extremely impressed:

Here’s some samples of the award presentations – here again, the light was perfectly even and never too harsh.  Despite a lot of mixed indoor lighting, very little color correction was required:

A few portraits were requested at the end of the ceremony:

Overall I was thrilled with the results I got, as was the school – I anticipate I’ll be asked to shoot more such ceremonies in the future.
