Review of the Canon RF 35mm f1.4 VCM

In June of 2024, I was ready.  For years, many of us had been waiting for Canon to fill what felt like an obvious gap in their RF lineup—a true 35mm f1.2 lens. Something that would sit alongside the 50mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.2 as the definitive statement of what Canon could do at this focal length.  Canon’s love letter to the 35mm focal length.  The kind of lens that pushes boundaries, ignores compromise, and delivers a look that immediately stands apart.

So when Canon finally announced the Canon RF 35mm f1.4L VCM, I’ll be honest—I was disappointed.  Not because it looked like a bad lens. Quite the opposite. I was disappointed because it wasn’t the lens I had been waiting for.  It wasn’t the no-compromise optical monster I had imagined. Instead, it was something different. Something more measured. Something that, at least on paper, appeared to trade a degree of ultimate optical purity for size, weight, and hybrid functionality.  At the time, that felt like a step in the wrong direction.

But time has a way of changing perspective.  And that’s exactly why I’m glad I didn’t rush this review.  In the nearly two years that have passed since the lens was introduced, I’ve gained some much-needed perspective and objectivity.

A Shift in Perspective

In the time since it was introduced, I’ve had the opportunity to see what the Canon RF 35mm f1.4L VCM can do in the hands of other photographers and creators. I’ve seen the images, watched the videos, and paid attention not just to the results, but to how people were actually using it.  And somewhere along the way, my thinking began to shift.

I still want that 35mm f1.2. I don’t think that desire has gone away, and I’m certainly not alone in that. There is still a place – an important place – for lenses that prioritize absolute image quality above all else.  But I’ve come to realize something else.  The Canon RF 35mm f1.4L VCM isn’t that lens.  And that’s okay.  Because the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM isn’t trying to be the ultimate expression of 35mm photography.  This lens isn’t chasing perfection.  It’s chasing usability.  It’s far more versatile – and depending on how you shoot, far more useful.

What This Lens Actually Is

From the moment you pick it up, it’s clear that this lens was designed with intention.  It’s relatively compact.  It’s light enough to carry all day without thinking about it.  It balances beautifully on modern RF bodies.  This is not a lens designed to win spec sheet battles. It’s a lens designed to fit into a workflow.  That distinction matters.  The inclusion of VCM (Voice Coil Motor) technology is a clear signal of where Canon’s priorities were. This lens is built for smooth, precise autofocus. It’s designed to minimize focus breathing. It’s optimized not just for stills, but for video—particularly for shooters who demand consistency and reliability in motion.

In other words, this is a hybrid lens in the truest sense of the word.  And once you accept that, everything about it starts to make more sense.

The Trade-Offs

There’s no getting around it – this lens represents a non-traditional approach to lens design – albeit one growing in popularity with manufacturers.  Where older designs often aimed to solve every optical challenge within the lens itself, modern lenses like this one are part of a larger system.  They work in conjunction with the camera, relying on digital corrections to address distortion, vignetting, and other optical imperfections.  For some photographers, this approach is going to be a sticking point.  For others, the size and weight this lens achieves will outweigh the compromises made.

There is a certain satisfaction that comes from knowing a lens is delivering its performance purely through glass. That what you’re seeing is the direct result of optical engineering, not software intervention.  It’s a philosophy rooted in craftsmanship and purity, and it’s not something that should be dismissed lightly.  This lens doesn’t fully subscribe to that philosophy.  Instead, it embraces a more modern approach—one that prioritizes overall usability, portability, and consistency.  It acknowledges that today’s cameras are incredibly powerful tools, capable of refining and enhancing the output in ways that weren’t possible even a decade ago.  Whether that’s a compromise or an evolution depends entirely on your perspective.

Who This Lens Is For

This is where the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM really starts to define itself.

If you are a hybrid shooter – someone who moves fluidly between stills and video—this lens makes an immediate case for itself.  The autofocus performance is smooth and reliable. The reduced focus breathing makes it far more predictable in video work.  And the size and weight make it an ideal candidate for gimbal use, where balance and efficiency matter just as much as image quality.  There’s also the advantage for gimbal users that this 35mm VCM shares the same size and weight as several other Canon VCM lenses.  That means you can quickly swap out different VCM lenses and never have to re-calibrate your gimbal.

For travel photographers, the appeal is just as clear.  While this isn’t one of the most optically distinctive lenses in Canon’s RF lineup, it does provide the flexibility to capture a wide range of scenes without feeling like you’re carrying a specialty tool.  It’s also a strong option for content creators – especially those working in fast-paced environments where versatility and reliability are more important than chasing absolute perfection.  In all of these scenarios, the lens excels because it was designed with these use cases in mind.

Who This Lens Is Not For

On the other hand, if you are a photography-first user who prioritizes absolute image quality above all else, this lens may not resonate with you in the same way.  If you’re chasing that last 5%—that intangible quality that separates a technically good image from something truly special—you may find yourself wanting more. Not because this lens is lacking, but because it was never intended to push those boundaries.  There is a difference between a lens that delivers excellent results and a lens that inspires you purely through its rendering.  Some photographers live for that difference.  They notice it immediately.  They feel it in their images.  And for them, this lens may feel a bit too controlled.  A bit too refined.  A bit too… practical.  That doesn’t make it a bad lens.  It just means it’s not the lens they’ve been waiting for.

Living With the Lens

After spending time with the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM, what stands out most is how easy it is to use.  It gets out of your way. It does its job. It delivers consistent, reliable results across a wide range of shooting conditions. And it does so without demanding anything from you in return.  It’s low friction in a 35mm focal length.  There’s something to be said for that.

Not every lens needs to be a statement piece. Not every lens needs to redefine what’s possible. Sometimes, the most valuable tools are the ones that are the path of least resistance.  That’s exactly the experience this lens provides.  And it does so relatively inexpensively at $1500.00.  Had this been the f1.2 hero lens many of us were expecting, it would’ve been more than double that price.

Final Thoughts

When this lens was first announced, I had expectations.  Strong ones.  And if I’m being honest, those expectations weren’t entirely fair.  I wanted this lens to be something it was never meant to be.  Now, with the benefit of time and a more objective perspective, I see it differently.  The Canon RF 35mm f1.4L VCM isn’t the ultimate 35mm lens.  It’s not the no-compromise optical benchmark that some of us were hoping.  But that doesn’t mean it falls short.  It just means Canon chose usability over perfection.  This is a lens built for the way many users shoot today.  It’s designed to be versatile, reliable, and easy to live with.  It embraces modern tools and workflows.  And it delivers a level of optical performance that, for most users, will be more than enough.

Would I still like to see Canon release a 35mm f1.2? Absolutely.  But I no longer see this lens as a missed opportunity.  Instead, I see it as a deliberate choice.  And for the right photographer, it’s a very good one.
