October 24th marked the final home varsity football game for Miamisburg High School. They had an aggressive road schedule this year with only four home games and unfortunately I was traveling during one of those.
The photos came out really well – a firmware update earlier this year for the Canon R5 Mark II add brought a new Subject Detection mode for American Football, which I’ve been using this year. I’ve noticed a marked increase in the number of “keeper” photos I’m getting using the new setting. It seems to do a pretty good job of locking on the football player with the ball. As usually, I was using the RF 70-200 as my lens. And in order to maintain a shutter speed of 1/1000th or better, most of these photos were taken at ISO 4000, which absolutely blows my mind. Some of the photos were admittedly a little noisy at that ISO (particularly in the shadows) but I continue to be extraordinarily impressed with Adobe Lightroom’s Denoise feature. It works miracles without destroying detail:
The marching band put on one heckuva show and I got some nice shots of them as well:
I’ll get a one month break in November then I’ll be back at it for Friday night home Varsity Basketball games starting in December.
